Can a digital payment system support fairer agricultural trade? Distributed Ledgers Technologies (DLTs) have been celebrated for their potential to facilitate trusted exchanges based on immutable records of transactions and automate payments. This paper examines the prospect of a DLT-powered payment system to address the power imbalance between small-scale farmers and wholesale buyers, affecting the value of farmers’ crops and cash flow. It shows that a DLT-powered payment system works best when it integrates local economic and legal infrastructures into its design.
